Why grind the stump?

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore — in South Florida it attracts termites, ants and fungus, sprouts new suckers, and gets in the way of mowing, replanting or new landscaping. Grinding turns it into mulch below the surface so the ground is usable again, without the huge hole and torn-up yard that digging a stump out leaves behind.

How we do it

  • We grind the stump 6–12 inches below grade (deeper if you're replanting in the same spot).
  • Surface roots can be ground back too if they're a tripping hazard or lifting pavers.
  • We rake the grindings back into the hole or haul them off — your choice.
  • Access matters: we use machines sized to fit through gates and tight side yards.

Common questions

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding chews the stump into mulch a foot or so below the surface — fast, affordable and easy on your yard. Full removal digs out the entire root ball, which leaves a large hole and is far more disruptive. For almost every homeowner, grinding is the better choice.
How deep do you grind?
Typically 6–12 inches below grade — deep enough to re-sod or plant grass over. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, we can go deeper.
Do the roots keep growing after grinding?
No. Once the stump is ground and the tree is gone, the roots stop growing and slowly decompose in the ground.
Will there be a mess?
We clean up the grindings — either backfilling the hole with them or hauling them away — and leave the area tidy.
