Stump removal vs. stump grinding: which one do you need?

When most people search for stump removal, they mean one thing: get the stump out of the yard. There are two ways to do that, and the right one depends on what you plan to put there next.

• Stump grinding - a grinder with a toothed cutting wheel chews the stump into wood chips 6 to 12 inches below grade. The roots stay in the ground and slowly rot. It is the faster, lighter-handed option and the one most homeowners want.
• Full stump removal - the whole root ball is dug out, along with the larger roots. It leaves a big hole that has to be filled and compacted, takes heavier equipment and more room to work, and does more damage to lawn, irrigation and pavers around it.

When grinding is the right call

If you want grass, a flower bed, shrubs or just a clear lawn where the stump was, grinding does the job. Old ground wood below the surface rots away on its own, and you are not paying to dig and refill a crater.

When full removal makes sense

If you are pouring a slab, building a pool, setting footings, or running a fence line through the spot, wood left underground can rot and leave a void that settles later. In those cases the stump and the big roots should come out, or be ground much deeper. The same goes for replanting a tree in the exact spot: a deeper grind or a full extraction gives the new roots clean ground. Why grind the stump?

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore - in South Florida it attracts termites, ants and fungus, sprouts new suckers, and gets in the way of mowing, replanting or new landscaping. Grinding turns it into mulch below the surface so the ground is usable again, without the huge hole and torn-up yard that digging a stump out leaves behind.

How we do it

• We grind the stump 6–12 inches below grade (deeper if you're replanting in the same spot).
• Surface roots can be ground back too if they're a tripping hazard or lifting pavers.
• We rake the grindings back into the hole or haul them off - your choice.
• Access matters: we use machines sized to fit through gates and tight side yards.

What happens to the grindings and the hole

Grinding leaves a pile of fresh wood chips sitting in and around the stump hole. You have two choices: we rake the chips back into the hole, or we haul them off. If you keep them, expect the spot to settle over the following months as the wood breaks down, so a mounded patch will sink and may need a top-off of clean soil before you re-sod. Hauling the chips away and filling with soil gives you a more stable surface. Either way, fresh chips are fine as mulch but make a poor planting medium, so do not plant a new tree directly into a pile of grindings.

After full stump removal the hole is much bigger, so it is filled with soil in layers and tamped down. It will still settle some, which is normal. Keep an eye on it after the first few heavy rains and top it off as needed.

Stumps that keep sprouting: ficus, Brazilian pepper and schefflera

Not every tree gives up when the stump is gone. Ficus, Brazilian pepper and schefflera are known for throwing new shoots from the stump and from roots left in the ground, and ficus also sends surface roots under pavers and pool decks. Grinding removes the stump crown where most sprouts start, but leftover roots can still push up suckers elsewhere in the yard. If you have one of these species, tell us when you call. Call 811 before deep stump removal

Digging out a root ball goes deeper than grinding, and Florida's one-call service, Sunshine 811, exists for exactly that. Dial 811 before any deep digging so utility companies can mark buried power, gas, water, phone and cable lines. The locate is free and usually takes a couple of business days, so build that into your schedule. Keep in mind that 811 does not mark private lines on your own property. Show us where your sprinkler lines, pool plumbing and landscape lighting run before work starts.

Access and small-yard machines

Many Broward stumps sit in back yards behind a gate, between a fence and a house, or next to a pool cage. Stump grinders come in compact, walk-behind sizes that fit through narrow gates and tight side yards, which is why grinding is often the only practical option in a small lot. Full stump removal needs room for heavier equipment.
