Big trees on big lots
Davie is the one place in Broward where a tree job can mean a hundred-year-old live oak with a sixty-foot spread, a stand of slash pines on an acre lot, or a row of Australian pines along a horse pasture. The town kept its ranchettes and equestrian zoning while the cities around it filled in with subdivisions, so lots along Orange Drive, Flamingo Road, Hiatus Road and Southwest Ranches are one to five acres with mature native trees that were never planted by anyone.
That changes the equipment and the planning. We bring a bucket truck or a crane for the big oaks, a chipper that keeps up with a day of brush, and a crew that knows how to work around paddocks, barns, fences and septic fields. The town's tree permit costs $35 for up to two trees on a single-family lot, and we handle it with the estimate.
Tree services we provide in Davie
- Tree trimming & pruning - structural pruning and deadwooding on the big native live oaks that shade Davie's older lots, canopy raising over paddocks and driveways.
- Tree removal - permitted takedowns of dead pines, failing oaks and overgrown exotics, with cranes where a tree cannot be climbed safely.
- Stump grinding - large stumps ground below grade so the pasture, lawn or replacement tree can go back in.
- Palm trimming - sabal, royal and queen palms cleaned on acreage and in the Pine Island Ridge and Forest Ridge communities.
- Storm & emergency service - big trees off houses, barns and fence lines after storms, with priority for anything blocking access to animals.
- Lot & land clearing - acreage cleared of melaleuca, Brazilian pepper and brush with the native oaks and pines flagged and kept.
Davie neighborhoods and the trees in them
Pine Island Ridge is a natural sand ridge, the highest ground in Broward County, and the oak hammock on it is the oldest canopy in the town. The condos, townhomes and single-family homes in Pine Island Ridge and Forest Ridge sit under live oaks that predate the development, and the work there is careful structural pruning and deadwooding, not removal. Shenandoah and the neighborhoods around University Drive and Nova Southeastern are 1970s and 1980s subdivisions with planted oaks and black olives that have reached full size.
West and south of that, Davie is acreage. Long Lake Ranches, Imagination Farms, Rolling Hills and the ranchettes along Orange Drive, Flamingo Road and the Southwest Ranches line have half-acre to five-acre lots with native slash pines, live oaks, cypress heads and, on the property lines, old stands of melaleuca and Australian pine. Dead pines are the most common removal call out here, and melaleuca and Brazilian pepper clearing is the most common land-clearing job. Horses change how we work: no chips or debris left in paddocks, gates closed behind us, and cranes positioned away from fence lines.
Tree removal permits in Davie
The Town of Davie requires a tree removal permit before any tree is removed, with one important exception: the invasive and exotic species listed in Section 12-152 of the town code, including melaleuca, Australian pine and Brazilian pepper, can come out without a permit, as long as the lot still meets the town's minimum tree count afterward. If removing exotics would leave the lot short, a no-cost permit is issued and the town may require replacement trees. For a standard removal or relocation of up to two trees on an existing single-family lot, the application fee is $35 and includes the inspections. Pruning does not require a permit, but the town recommends a licensed arborist and specifically warns against topping. The Chief Landscape Inspector in Planning and Zoning administers it at (954) 797-2056. We prepare the application and the arborist's reason for removal with the estimate. Our Broward tree permit guide covers the county layer.
Storm season on acreage
Big native trees on open lots take wind differently than planted trees on a subdivision lot. A sound live oak that has been thinned will stand through a hurricane, and a slash pine that has been dead for a year will not. Davie's storm failures are mostly dead and declining pines, over-extended oak limbs over roofs and barns, and the brittle exotics, melaleuca and Australian pine, that come down across fence lines and driveways. The spring work is removing dead pines, reducing long oak limbs, and clearing the exotics that will become debris. After a storm we open driveways and access to animals first, get trees off structures, and cut debris to the lengths the town's contractors will collect.
